Happy Spring G!
It may not look like it out your window (it certainly doesn't here in Boston) but the calendar says it is spring. We're not ones to argue with the calendar so today when the whistle blows we'll enjoy our spring seasonal brew - Samuel Adams® White Ale. One really good thing about working for Samuel Adams is we brew over 21 styles. Samuel Adams Boston Lager® is the one that started it all and remains our favorite but we also have a lot of options to choose from depending on our mood or the occasion. For example, earlier this week we honored St. Patrick's Day by enjoying a couple Samuel Adam® Irish Red ales. Speaking of options, next month we'll release the 2009 Samuel Adams® LongShot® Variety 6-pack that includes the 3 winning brews from the 2008 Samuel Adams® American Homebrew Contest®. For information on that and more please continue reading...

LongShot
Before we introduce the LongShot beers we want to acknowledge the recent tragic passing of our friend William Brand of The Oakland Tribune. Samuel Adams founder and brewer, Jim Koch has known Bill since in the introduction of Samuel Adams Boston Lager back in 1984. Jim reflected on their friendship:
"There weren't many "beer journalists" around in 1984 when I started The Boston Beer Company. But Bill Brand was a man ahead of his time. He wrote about Samuel Adams before it was even available in his home state of California, and he was the first beer writer I met in California when we introduced Sam Adams to San Francisco in the late 1980s. For twenty five years I always looked forward to his columns in The Oakland Tribune, and more recently to his blog. He had an impeccable palate and a wonderful way with words. He was a champion of American craft beers, but he was also a fair critic of beers he felt didn't represent the category well. The industry has lost an advocate and brewers all over the country, me included, have lost a friend. My memories of the most recent Longshot judging ,in which Bill participated, are now tinged with a bittersweet sadness, since it was the last time I got to welcome him to our Boston Brewery and listen to his insights as we spent hours doing what he liked to do best: tasting new and interesting beers. I know I speak for all of us at Sam Adams who knew him when I send our thoughts and condolences to his family, his friends and his fans.
Bill was a long-time judge in our Longshot competition. I hope that when drinkers sample this year's winning Longshot beers they will know they are drinking beers that Bill Brand judged to be excellent."
The 2008 Samuel Adams® American Homebrew Contest® once again offered participants a mighty challenge and nearly 2000 of you heeded the call. The prize was national homebrewing glory - winners' brews to be included in the 2009 Samuel Adams® LongShot® Variety 6-pack. All entries were received and categorized by May 1 and the stage was set for an epic homebrew hoedown.
Samuel Adams founder and brewer, Jim Koch, and a panel of industry judges including the late William Brand of The Oakland Tribune, Tony Forder of Ale Street News and Marty Nachel, author of Homebrewing for Dummies, had the difficult task of selecting the 2008 consumer winners. Together they determined the final winning consumer recipe based on the American Homebrewers Association Beer Judge Certificate Program guidelines. Each beer was carefully evaluated by style category and judged on how well the style characteristics and flavors were exhibited.
Once the competitive dust had settled, California-resident Alex Drobshoffs' Traditional Bock emerged the big winner. Alex's beer will be joined in the LongShot six-pack by California-resident Mike McDole's Double IPA and Samuel Adams Employee Carissa Sweigart's Cranberry Wit. Mike's Double IPA won acclaim from the judges in 2007, but due to the worldwide hops shortage and a desire to preserve the integrity of the beer's recipe, calling for seven hop varieties, Mike elected to delay the brewing of his beer for the 2009 LongShot package.
Look for the 2009 Samuel Adams LongShot® Variety 6-pack nationwide in select retail stores beginning in April.
Do you want your shot at glory? The 2009 Samuel Adams® American Homebrew Contest® is going on now! If you are interested in getting your brew in the 2010 LongShot package visit www.samueladams.com for details today. Entries must be received between April 15 and May 1 and the winners will be announced at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival. Good luck! |

Beer of the Month
Malty and slightly sweet, balanced by earthy notes from the hops.
Samuel Adams Irish Red was our third beer to be deemed "A Beer of the People." It earned this title by winning our 2007 Beer Lover's Choice campaign. This was the third time we asked American beer lovers to choose our next brew. Elected by more than 42,000 people across the United States, Samuel Adams Irish Red is our twist on a classic Irish brew. Originally brewed in Kilkenny, Ireland in 1710, Irish Red Ales are rich in flavor, yet smooth and balanced, making them ideal for warm, sunny days, yet pleasantly cozy during the chilly ones.
The gentle rain and fertile soil of Ireland helped inspire this style of ale, known for being remarkably balanced. Pale and Caramel malts give the beer its rich, deep red color and distinctive caramel flavor. The sweetness of the malt is pleasantly balanced by a pronounced hop bitterness and an earthy note from the East Kent Goldings hops. Samuel Adams Irish Red finishes smooth and leaves you wanting to take another sip.
Look for Samuel Adams Irish Red year-round in its own 6-pack as well as part of the Samuel Adams Brewmaster's Variety 12-pack available now through late March and again August through October. |

We knocked down some walls, built some new ones and generally made the brewery a better place to visit.
